Electrical Engineering for Energy Independence

Founded in 2016, Solstice Electric exists to solve the gap between renewable ambition and electrical infrastructure reality. We design systems that make energy independence practical, not just aspirational.

How We Started

Our founder, Sarah Chen, spent five years as a senior electrical engineer at a major utilities company, optimizing grid load management for a 400,000-customer territory. She witnessed firsthand how residential customers wanted to go off-grid or cut bills, but the systems available were fragmented—solar from one vendor, battery from another, EV charging from a third, none of them talking to each other.

In 2016, she left to start Solstice. The mission: design integrated electrical systems where every component (solar inverter, battery, EV charger, smart panel) shares data and makes decisions together. Not a collection of boxes. A coherent infrastructure.

By 2020, we'd completed 120 residential projects in Boulder and the surrounding Front Range. We hired four senior electricians, all licensed and NABCEP-certified. By 2024, we'd expanded to commercial systems—office retrofits, light industrial, community centers—and were consulting on electrical resilience for a regional municipal utility.

Today, we're Boulder's go-to firm for homes and small commercial buildings that demand engineering rigor, not sales volume.

How We Work

Energy-First

Every project begins with an energy audit. We measure your consumption, model your peak loads, analyze utility rate schedules, and only then design a system. No oversizing. No guessing.

Transparent Engineering

Proposals include one-line electrical diagrams, load calculations, equipment cut sheets, and permitting timelines. We walk you through the engineering so you understand the 'why' behind every choice.

Long-Term Partnership

We design for longevity. All systems come with 10-year warranties on workmanship and access to annual maintenance. Your system should outlive five utility rate hikes.

Credentials

  • Master Electrician License — State of Colorado (License #ME-2048571). Renewed annually with 30 CE hours.
  • NABCEP PV Installation Professional — North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. Recertified 2024.
  • Tesla Certified Installer — Powerwall, Solar Roof integration, and Supercharger site design.
  • ChargePoint Network Partner — Level 2 and DC fast charging installation and commissioning.
  • Colorado Residential Contractor License — License #14-12847. Bonded and insured ($2M general liability).

Rooted in Boulder

We're not a national franchise. Sarah and the team live in Boulder, work with local suppliers, and participate actively in the community. We sponsor the Boulder Public Library's annual energy efficiency seminars and mentor students through the Boulder Valley School District's STEM programs. We're investors in the community we serve.

Boulder's natural vision of clean energy and environmental stewardship shaped Solstice from the start. We live in a town that voted to transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2030. That's the conversation we wake up to. Our work reflects that commitment.

What's Next

By 2030, we aim to have designed electrical systems for 500+ homes and commercial buildings throughout Colorado, collectively offsetting 50 GWh of annual grid consumption. That's ambitious. But incremental decisions compound.

Every EV charger we install, every battery we commission, every demand-response algorithm we tune—they shift the energy curve by a fraction. Multiplied across our portfolio, that's real decarbonization.
