Battery Backup Systems

Whole-home battery storage with automatic transfer switches. We install and integrate Tesla Powerwall, LG Chem, and Enphase systems with real-time monitoring and grid-aware optimization.

Why Battery Storage Matters

A battery backup system bridges the gap between renewable generation and grid outages. Solar produces power during the day, but your peak consumption often occurs at evening when the sun sets. Battery storage time-shifts that energy, improving self-consumption and reducing reliance on the grid. During blackouts, batteries keep critical loads running indefinitely (with proper solar production or microgrid connection).

System Options

Tesla Powerwall (13.5 kWh): The most popular residential option. Sleek wall-mounted design, native solar integration, 10-year warranty. Cost: $8,500–$12,000 installed. Best for homes with existing or planned solar.

LG Chem (10 kWh, 16 kWh): Industrial-grade chemistry, modular stacking. Lower upfront cost, longer cycle life. Cost: $6,500–$11,000 installed.

Enphase IQ: Modular battery pods (5.2 kWh each) that scale. Excellent for complex multi-system homes. Cost: $3,000–$4,000 per module.

Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS)

The critical safety device. When the grid goes down, the ATS automatically disconnects from utility power and supplies critical loads (refrigerator, HVAC, lighting) from the battery. When the grid returns, it safely re-synchronizes. We design and install sub-panels that separate "critical" circuits from "non-critical" so the battery reserves energy for essentials.

Real-Time Monitoring & Optimization

All systems integrate with our custom energy dashboards. You see in real-time: current grid export/import, battery state of charge, solar production, and demand forecasting. Some systems use AI to predict tomorrow's weather, solar production, and utility pricing, automatically charging your battery during cheap hours.

The Complete Installation

  1. Load Analysis: Identify critical loads (HVAC, fridge, medical devices, heating) and calculate daily run time on battery reserve.
  2. Battery Sizing: Size for at least 1–2 days of critical load if solar isn't producing, or 4–6 hours for backup during outages.
  3. Electrical Design: Sub-panel wiring, ATS integration, grounding, overcurrent protection, safety disconnects.
  4. Permitting & Inspection: Boulder electrical inspectors verify ATS operation, battery location (ventilation), and backup system coordination.
  5. Installation: Battery mounting, electrical termination, and system commissioning.
  6. Testing & Training: We simulate grid outages and verify ATS operation, then walk you through monitoring and optimization features.

Cost & Financial Incentives

Residential System: $15,000–$25,000 installed for a 13.5 kWh Powerwall with ATS and critical-load sub-panel. Includes permitting, electrical upgrades, and commissioning.

Multi-Unit Storage: Enphase IQ systems start at $3,000 per 5.2 kWh module. A 20 kWh system runs $18,000–$30,000.

Federal Tax Credit: 30% federal ITC applies to residential battery storage (if paired with solar). Max $7,500 credit for a $25,000 system.

Colorado Incentives: Check with Public Service Company of Colorado for time-of-use rebates and demand-response programs. Some offer $1,000–$3,000 for residential battery enrollment.
